   Twin Sisters

Distance: 3.7 miles (one-way)
Elevation gain: 2,338 ft.
Difficulty: Moderate
Trailhead: Twins Sisters Trailhead- across from Lily Lake

Twins Sisters has a lot of memories for me since it was the first peak I climbed in the park. I arrived in Estes Park in May of 1976 with a summer job at what was then Longs Peak Inn owned by Bob and Virginia Akins. About 12 of the staff went on this adventure. What I remember most was the lack of air, the incredible view, my aching legs, and the snow storm on the way down making it impossible to peel the orange in my lunch bag. Being a Virginia girl, snow in May was unheard of.

As years have gone by, Twin Sisters became more of a conditioning hike for bigger and better things rather than a great place to go on its own- that is until last year when David and I discovered the new trailhead from Lily Lake. What a beautiful job- my hat off to the trail crew! The trail now begins further north and is much more enjoyable and scenic. The views through the trees down to Lily Lake and across to Long's Peak rival the panoramic view from the top. This is still a superb conditioning hike since it is short (about 3 1/2 miles up) but packs in quite a bit of elevation gain. It is also one that can be enjoyed early in the season.
